In typical Manhattan fashion, Tom Ewell’s family goes away for the summer. Tom stays back in the city and enjoys the bachelor lifestyle while his family is away traveling. When a new Girl (Monroe) moves in upstairs his temptations get the better of him.

This classic 1955 movie features one of the most iconic images of the 20th century, the famous scene of Marilyn Monroe standing over a New York City subway grate with her dress billowing in the breeze. This iconic image was forever captured in the history of American popular culture.

BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK

Dir. John Sturges (USA: 1955), 81 min. Bad Day at Black Rock is a thriller film, incorporating elements of westerns and film noir. The idea for the film originated from Howard Breslin’s short story “Bad Time at Honda”. In 1947, the story was featured in The American Magazine with illustrations by Robert Fawcett. Don McGuire and Millard Kaufman adapted Breslin’s story into the film’s screenplay. The film is set in 1945 when the handicapped protagonist, John J. Macreedy (Spencer Tracy), travels via train to the desert of Black Rock, in search of a Japanese-American man named Komoko. Upon his arrival he experiences hostility from the few residents of this isolated town. Macreedy soon realizes the locals have a secret they have been hiding for years. While trying to protect their secret the locals will commit acts of violence towards Macreedy, who must fight for his life.

Spencer Tracy won the Best Actor award at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival for his performance in Bad Day at Black Rock. Additionally, the film was nominated for three Academy Awards, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Director, and Best Writing (Screenplay).

Artist Greg Payce exhibition "Illusions" at the Gardiner Museum

The Gardiner Museum will celebrate the New Year by recognizing Canadian ceramic artist Greg Payce with a solo exhibition. Greg Payce: Illusions (February 2 - May 6 2012) features the signature ceramic installations that elevated Payce to superstar status in the ceramics community and brought him to the attention of the contemporary art world, as well as his more recent large scale lenticular photographs and video works. Payce’s work is steeped in history and also very contemporary. Technically brilliant, it surprises and delights by playing with our perceptions.

Dir. Fred Zinnemann (USA: 1955), 145 min. Oklahoma is a musical film based on the musical play from 1943 originally written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The film is set in Oklahoma in the early 1900’s and the main plot is based around two love triangles. Curly (played by Gordon MacRae) is a cowboy who has feelings for Laurey (played by Shirley Jones) but the relationship takes a turn when a farmhand, Judd, is hired and tries to come between their relationship. The other love triangle involves Ado Annie. She is torn between her feelings for Will, a local cowboy, and Ali, a traveling peddler.

The film won two Academy Awards; Best Music (Scoring of a Musical Picture) and Best Sound (Recording.) The film was also nominated for Best Cinematography (Colour) and Best Film Editing. The film includes songs such as "Oh What a Beautiful Mornin',” “People Will Say We're In Love,” and “Oklahoma!”

1955: A Group Show

The gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition of photographic work made in 1955.

Exhibition Dates: January 21 – February 18, 2012

Fascinated by the optimism of the 1950s, Stephen Bulger has long considered 1955 to be the epitome of this era, so often mythologized and made nostalgic in North American mass media.

This exhibition contains works by various makers, all photographed in 1955, displaying many different approaches to photography:

1955 begins with Larry Morris’ photograph of The Times Square New Year's Eve Party welcoming in 1955, which was the 50th anniversary of the first celebration at One Times Square.

Charles Swedlund, a twenty year old native of Chicago who had graduated from the famed Institute of Design and, in 1955, delved into an intense year of image making. On exhibit are selections of his multiple exposures from the series called “Chicago,” as well as selections from his series “Firefighters.”

George S. Zimbel travelled America in 1955 and received an assignment to photograph New Orleans. His take on the city was a rawer look than was wanted by the client, who offered only a ‘kill fee’ after seeing the photographs. Images from this series have been acquired by major museums around the world, and were published as Bourbon Street, New Orleans 1955 [les éditions du passage, 2006.]. This trip confirmed George’s love of Elaine Sernovitz, to whom he proposed from El Paso. They rendezvoused in New Orleans and were married there on Feb 3, 1955.

The exhibition also offers glimpses of life in 1955, and fine examples of photographic practice by these makers: Dr.Harold Edgerton; Elliot Erwitt; Dave Heath; André Kertész, O. Winston Link; Angus McBean; W. Eugene Smith; Frederick Sommer; Dennis Stock; and Gabor Szilasi.

The exhibition also includes the wedding portrait of Murray and Jane Bulger, who were married on February 19, 1955, and to whom this exhibition is lovingly dedicated.

“The Suffering of Light” is presented in conjunction with the APERTURE release of the monograph with the same name. This exhibition gathers some of Webb’s most iconic images, taken in the far corners of the earth, and chronicles his acute reflections of daily life with his remarkable sense of colour and composition.

Recognized as a pioneer of American colour photography since the 1970s, Webb has consistently created photographs characterized by intense colour and light. His work, with its richly layered and complex composition, touches on multiple genres, including street photography, photojournalism, and fine art, but as Webb claims, “to me it all is photography. You have to go out and explore the world with a camera.” Webb’s ability to distill gesture, colour, and contrasting cultural tensions into single, beguiling frames results in evocative images that convey a sense of enigma, irony, and humour. Featuring key works alongside previously unpublished photographs, “The Suffering of Light” provides the most thorough examination to date of this modern master’s prolific, thirty-year career.

Alex Webb (b. San Francisco, 1952) became interested in photography during his high school years and attended the Apeiron Workshops in Millerton, New York, in 1972. He majored in history and literature at Harvard University, at the same time studying photography at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts. In 1974, he began working as a professional photojournalist and he joined Magnum Photos as an associate member in 1976.

During the mid-1970s, Webb photographed in the American south, documenting small-town life in black and white. He also began working in the Caribbean and Mexico. In 1978 he started to photograph in colour, as he has continued to do. He has published nine photography books, including Hot Light/Half-Made Worlds: Photographs from the Tropics, Under A Grudging Sun, Crossings, Istanbul: City of a Hundred Names, Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs of Cuba (with Rebecca Norris Webb), and, most recently, The Suffering of Light: Thirty Years of Photographs.

Webb received a New York Foundation of the Arts Grant in 1986, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1990, a Hasselblad Foundation Grant in 1998 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007. He won the Leopold Godowsky Color Photography Award in 1988, the Leica Medal of Excellence in 2000 and the David Octavius Hill Award in 2002. His photographs have been the subject of articles in Art in America and Modern Photography. He has exhibited widely in the United States and Europe, in museums including the Walker Art Center, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the International Center of Photography, the High Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, including a current show at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, “Violet Isle” (with Rebecca Norris Webb). Webb, a member of Magnum Photos since 1976, lives in New York City with photographer Rebecca Norris Webb.

For the exhibition, "Out of Nowhere", gallery artist Sarah Anne Johnson and Border Crossings editor Meeka Walsh have selected a group of ten artists from their native city of Winnipeg. The work of these Winnipeg born artists represents a range of media: painting, drawing, photography, video, and collage. Drawing on Winnipeg native Marshall McLuhan as source, these artists have clearly massaged their media. Most are relatively young and several were shown in the acclaimed "My Winnipeg," an extensive exhibition that premiered at La maison rouge in Paris and recently opened at the Musee International des Arts Modestes in Sete, France. This show, however, marks the first US exhibition for most of them.

Winnipeg enjoys an almost mythical reputation as a creative center. The region has produced the internationally recognized Royal Art Lodge collective — a group of artists that included Marcel Dzama, Neil Farber, Michael Dumontier and Jon Pylypchuk, among others. The noted filmmaker and director of ten feature length and countless short films, Guy Maddin, is a Winnipegger, as are painters Tim Gardner and Karel Funk and photographer Laura Letinsky.

The most senior artist in our show is Neil Farber, one of the founders of the Royal Art Lodge who is well known for his distinctive style of densely populating worlds filled with a curious cast of characters. Some are human and others not, and in his works he combines a fulsome intensity with wry and particular humor. The video team of Lasha Mowchun and Rachel Schappert also produce work which is intense and their video provides a Surrealist's lampoon of the artist's role in society. With Ted Barker, they are the youngest participants in the show but Barker's work, densely drawn and closely rendered in its exactitude shows a careful and precise representation of a history which is at once personal, historic and specific to place. Simon Hughes applies a mid century aesthetic to playful materials such as stickers and Lego-like building blocks and adds a repertoire of Canadian iconography from ice flows and snow to the dazzling Aurora Borealis.

Erica Eyres is interested in the fragile and resilient, inventive human condition. Her drawings and videos examine, with uncanny psychic accuracy how we perceive others and how we portray ourselves but her scrutiny is off-set with a certain humane generosity. Lisa Wood's painting and graphic works center on the subject of self-portraiture, rendered up-close and personal. Her gaze is unflinching.

There are two photographers in the exhibition, Steve Ackerman and Elaine Stocki. After having lived in New York Ackerman has now returned to Winnipeg, working on occasion with Guy Maddin and also producing his own work which often reflects the rough setting and indigent characters in his community. Elaine Stocki, who, like Sarah Johnson has an MFA from Yale lives in New York but identifies Winnipeg as home. Stocki theatrically challenges the expected limits of documentary photography and will be showing platinum-printed images of gymnasts who appear, like many of Stocki's figures, to inhabit a space of their own time and making. They are unique and other-worldly. Paul Robles, using a sharp blade and a fine hand, renders porn magazine images into lacy fret-work moths and butterflies, mounting their small forms in boxes that would have Vladimir Nabokov applauding.

Located in the geographic center of the country, Winnipeg sits on a vast flood plain that was once prehistoric Lake Agassiz. The wind sweeps across the wide expanse which, in winter, becomes what noted poet Robert Kroetsch called "the white erasure of snow". Artists are impelled each year to re-inscribe this clean sheet. It's this sense of opportunity, necessity and vulnerability that draws Winnipeggers together to work collectively and at the same time to assert an iconoclastic individuality. The city is both isolated and central. Its inhabitants have a strong sense of themselves and this generative quality produces the art which is attracting attention wherever it is seen.

Born in the US in 1955, Dona Schwartz is an Associate Professor specializing in Visual Communication at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota. Her portrait is of Christina and Mark Bigelow from Minnesota in their son’s vacated bedroom. The image is from her current series, On the Nest, documenting moments of change in parents’ lives, and this photograph explores the emotions experienced by parents as their children leave home. She says:

’The transition to life as an empty nester lacks formal ritual observance. In this case there is no finite gestation period and the new beginning it heralds may be more sobering.’

“The Road North” features work from Hartman’s two recent series “Highway 69” and “Collins and Heron Bay”, both of which explore notions of memory, the environment and our relationship to the landscape.

Hartman’s “Highway 69” examines the interaction between humans and landscape, and the influences each has on the other. This work was inspired by the artist’s connection to this particular region as a result of travelling through it his whole life. Hartman documents this landscape in transition as it goes through a state of deconstruction and reconstruction via the longstanding expansion project of the highway.

“Highway 69” is also the first leg of a journey that leads to two small native communities in Northern Ontario, Collins and Heron Bay, where Hartman spent the first three years of his life. Although he had no real memories of those early years, his first conscious memory being the day his family moved from the north to the house that his family still inhabits in southern Ontario, he did have images of those early years in his mind.

Hartman’s first year psychology course at Laurentian University, taught him that the mind has the ability to create personal memories from stories heard repeatedly, and that these memories feel as genuine as a memory created from an actual experience. He felt that the images in his mind’s eye of those early years in Collins and Heron Bay were most likely created after listening to the stories that his parents told over the years. Floating through his thoughts just like concrete memories, made it hard to distinguish fabrications pasted together from stories and old photographs, with other memories and thoughts from his subconscious.

Hartman’s series “Collins and Heron Bay” culminated out of a trip to the area 30 years after having left, to determine if his memories were fictional or concrete. Hartman made photographs of places that felt familiar to him, places that he had no doubt passed through 30 years earlier, yet he had no memory of having been there before.

After receiving a Master’s degree in Kinesiology at the University of McMaster in 2004 and being accepted into Medical School, Hartman decided to pursue a career as an artist. He is a self-taught photographer and apprenticed with Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky for over five years. His work can be found in several collections including: Art Gallery of Hamilton, RBC Financial Group, Farrow Partnerships Architects, Pioneer Construction, Murray Demolition, Quadrangle Architects, amongst many others.

The director, played by Maurizio Nichetti himself, is invited to a TV studio to introduce his best known film, “Ladri di saponette,” a pun on the neo realist film by De Sica, “The Bicycle Thief”. Once the film starts, the situation deteriorates into horror for the director. His black and white tale of the hardships of poverty is constantly interrupted by loud and vulgar blasts of colour commercial advertisements. These gradually take over the screening to the dismay of the director and the apathy of the audience.

In celebration of The Wedding Co.’s 10th anniversary Catherine Lash and Stephen Bulger will be displaying a selection of wedding photographs from their collection. The photographs, which were made over an approximate 140 year period, have been collected throughout the past 15 years.

Initially interested in building a collection of authentic wedding photographs in a variety of early photographic processes, the collection has grown to approximately 250 individual items. Each is exemplary of different approaches to photographing and methods of printing. They also provide an illustrated history of fashion and offer insight into various wedding traditions and rituals. The collection is predominantly North American and European in content, but more recently has been expanding into a more global search for new photographs to acquire.

Stephen and Catherine are grateful to all of the sources for the photographs they have had the pleasure to acquire either by purchase or through gifts. They are especially grateful to Robyn Zolnai for her enthusiastic diligence in cataloguing the collection to this point.

Dir. Niki Caro (New Zealand: 2002), 101 min. This film is about Paikea Apirana, a 12 year old girl in living on the east coast of New Zealand. Her twin brother dies at birth leaving her that only living child in the line of succession for the Whangara people. Traditionally the new chief is the first born male, therefore Paikea’s grandfather Koro will not allow her to become chief. Although Paikea loves her grandfather she must fight for what she feels is her destiny.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2002. Actress Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated at the 2004 Academy Awards for Best Actress making her the youngest person to be nominated in that category at the age of 13.

Through group portfolio reviews, discussions, presentations, an editing exercise, and a gallery talk, this two-day intensive workshop will help photographers begin to understand their own distinct way of seeing the world and help to figure out their next step photographically.

This is a workshop for serious amateurs and professionals alike. The workshop will begin with a slide presentation of Alex and Rebecca’s work on Friday evening at the Stephen Bulger Gallery. The next morning will begin with the reviews of each photographer's work, serving as a jumping off point for a larger discussion about various photographic issues. Alex and Rebecca are a creative team who often edit projects and books together, including their book and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, exhibition, "Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba." They will explore a series of topics, including the process of photographing spontaneously and intuitively; how to photograph in cultures other than one's own; how to edit photographs intuitively; the practical realities of the magazine and art worlds; the emotional and psychological implications of working in color vs. black and white; the difference between images in a book and images on the wall; and how long-term projects can evolve into books and exhibitions. Participants should be prepared to ask questions, as these concerns will help shape the ultimate direction of the workshop.

What to Bring to the Workshop:

For the Saturday group portfolio review, which will introduce everyone and touch on larger photographic issues that may pertain to others in the workshop as well, participants should bring about 30 - 40 prints (Please bring prints, NOT digital files). The prints do not have to be fine art prints; they can be small, inexpensive work prints, such as inkjet prints. The main focus is the image, NOT the quality of the print. Those working in a series of photographs should bring a selection of photographs from two or three series, or an excerpt from a long-term project, which participants are welcome to sequence. We are interested in each participant’s individual vision, rather than whether he or she can work professionally or not. So bring your personal project or projects –– the work that represents your passions, your obsessions –– not the set of portraits done simply to satisfy an editor or art director.

Refreshments and lunch will be provided on Saturday. Please contact the gallery about any dietary restrictions or allergies.

*For those who have taken a workshop with Alex and Rebecca in the past, you have the option of bringing 40 prints from a long-term project that you have sequenced.

The Workshop Teachers:

Alex Webb is best known for his vibrant and complex colour work, especially from Latin America and the Caribbean. He has published nine books, including Istanbul: City of a Hundred Names, and his most recent, The Suffering of Light: Thirty Years of Photographs (Aperture/Thames and Hudson, UK Edition). Alex has exhibited at museums worldwide including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, and the Guggenheim Museum, NY. Alex became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1979. His work has appeared in National Geographic, the New York Times Magazine, Geo, and other magazines. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007 for his continued work in Cuba, and the Premio Internacional de Fotografia Alcobendas in 2009.

For the past decade, Rebecca Norris Webb has been exploring the complicated relationship between people and the natural world. Originally a poet, she has shown her photographic work internationally, including the George Eastman House Museum and Ricco Maresca Gallery, New York. Her first book, The Glass Between Us, was published in 2006, and her second book, Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba (with Alex Webb), was published in November 2009. Her photographs are in the collections of the George Eastman House Museum, Rochester; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, Provincetown. She is also represented by the Photographers’ Gallery in London. Rebecca’s work has appeared in Time, New Letters, Orion, and other magazines. Her third book, My Dakota, will be published in 2012 by Radius, and exhibited at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City, South Dakota. Alex and Rebecca have a joint exhibition of their Cuba photographs at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which will run until January 2012. It will then travel to the Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona, Florida. The couple is currently collaborating on a project in the U.S.
