Signal to Noise

February 16, 2017 – April 22, 2017

Opening Reception: Thursday, February 23, 6 – 8 PM
Conversation with the Artist: Thursday, March 9, 6 - 8 PM
Sanaz Mazinani and Marc Mayer, Senior Educator of Contemporary Art, Asian Art Museum

In Signal to Noise, Mazinani presents a combination of photo-based wall sculptures, a large scale wall hanging, and site-specific sound, wall, floor, and window installation elements. The overall effect creates a transformative experience in the gallery space, with the intention of providing visitors a contemplative step away from the inundating stimulus of the current moment. Mazinani sources popular media imagery, mined from the Internet, and through sequential pairing, repeating, and mirroring, creates elaborate geometric patterns evocative of traditional Islamic ornamentation. Her work exploits the parallels of dissociation that occur between the experience of an event and its photographic record, and the means by which repetition, as a media strategy, can affect our association with photographic meaning.
