Of his photographic series featured in this exhibition, artist Joseph Hartman notes: “Georgian Bay’s North Eastern shoreline is a landscape that I know intimately. While at university working with the Canadian Coast Guard, we spent our time from May to September patrolling a 100 km section of coastline that extends from Britt to Killarney. This shoreline, which is only accessible by boat or float plane, is sparsely populated with small communities. These communities are functioning remnants of Georgian Bay’s commercial past; mainly fishing, shipping and tourism. These industries are no longer lucrative and my interest in these communities is to photograph them in a way that explores the human desire to live in such an environment.”

This show is jointly sponsored by the Carnegie Gallery’s TBA and the McMaster Museum of Art, where Hartman has a concurrent show, Hamilton, through August 20.  This is the second show co-sponsored by the TBA and the MMA.
