 Magnum’s Larry Towell says he has been photographing issues of land and landlessness all his life, so when the protests of the Dakota Access Pipeline garnered national attention, he followed his instincts to head out to Standing Rock. “When you lose your land, you lose your identity,” Towell tells TIME.  - TIME December 2016

Photographer Larry Towell feels that what's happening at the Oceti Sakowin Camp in North Dakota is about more than just an oil pipeline. "I believe it is the beginning of a civil rights movement in America," he said. "Only it involves a different ethnic minority." "In photography, the transparency and reflectivity of glass as both a subject and symbol have made windows a particularly popular theme. Since the invention of the medium, photographers have been attracted to the subject, whether as an exploration of still life, portraiture, popular culture or even abstraction. With their ability to both reveal and obscure, to challenge ideas about the viewer and the viewed, or to dissolve the boundaries of inside and outside space, windows have been used as a metaphor for the act of looking itself."

Decolonial Politics Today?

How do notions of the ‘decolonial' continue to challenge the violence of colonial pasts and present? A contested term within the visual arts and wider cultural debates, this event reflects on the current status of 'decolonial' activity in the visual arts, and explores what kind of politics are being produced.

This discussion will ask probing questions about what we mean by the decolonial and what we aspire to produce through such work. What would decolonized public spaces and institutions look like? How might this reject simple narratives of inclusion?

Is current decolonial activity fulfilling a disruptive political and intellectual agenda? And who has the right to speak and act on behalf of a decolonial politics?

The panel will include Alanna Lockward and Sunil Gupta, chaired by Autograph ABP Director Mark Sealy.

TATE RESEARCH CENTRE: ASIA SEMINAR
Transnationalism in Practice: Strategies of Affect

This seminar examines two approaches to transnational artistic and curatorial production in London, and will invite Sunil Gupta and Grant Watson to revisit key projects with an emphasis on research and practice in South Asia.


Leela Gandhi’s book Affective Communities (2006) recuperated micro-narratives, moments of anti-imperial resistance and political strategies that created a shared solidarity between queer and postcolonial communities. As curators negotiate unprecedented access to international art, this seminar will reconsider recent exhibition histories through alternative curatorial models that deploy international networks of shared knowledge, radical practice, resistance or refusal.

This discussion is informed by the Bhupen Khakhar retrospective at Tate Modern that closed in November, and precedes Queer British Art at Tate Britain next April. Following the presentations, the panel will be chaired by Nada Raza, the Research Curator at Tate Research Centre: Asia and the curator of the Bhupen Khakhar exhibition.

Alex Webb: La Calle: Photographs From Mexico

For over 30 years and in more than 40 trips, photographer Alex Webb (b. 1952) has traversed the streets of Mexico. His first visit, in 1975, introduced him to the rich culture and people, enticing him to go back, time and again.

With the publication of Webb's most recent book, we are pleased to present a 60-piece traveling exhibit organized by Aperture Foundation and Fundación Televisa. In La Calle, the magic, mystery, and shadows of our complex neighbor are revealed through the mastery of Webb's receptive eye. Part documentarian, part lover, Webb both surrenders to and collaborates with the street, creating a layered, complicated portrait of the seductive muse that is Mexico.

Kansas City's KCUR Interviews Keith F. Davis, Senior Curator of Photography at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art on Dave Heath's Current Exhibtion "Multitude, Solitude"

"The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art has the largest institutional holding of Heath's work in the United States, and the museum's new exhibition Multitude, Solitude: The Photographs of Dave Heath — with nearly 200 photographs from the late 1940s to 2007, from black and white to color — explores themes of loneliness and the desire for connection. 

Heath was born in 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and experienced a troubled childhood. By the age of four, he'd been abandoned by both of his parents; he grew up in a series of foster homes and an orphanage. As a teenager, Heath discovered photography, and he considered it his salvation.

Keith F. Davis, senior curator of photography at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, has been a fan of Heath's work since the 1970s when he was a student of photography. Davis began acquiring Heath's prints in the 1980s as chief curator of the Hallmark Photographic Collection, which, in 2005, was donated to The Nelson-Atkins." - Laura Spencer, November 18, 2016

Upcoming Exhibition - Scott Conarroe - Frontière, Frontiera, Grenze

The gallery is pleased to present “Frontière, Frontiera, Grenze”, our fourth solo exhibition of work by Canadian photographer Scott Conarroe.

"Frontière, Frontiera, Grenze” considers the moveable boundaries that select Alpine states devised in response to glacial melting and drifting watersheds. As permafrost in the Alps retreats to cooler elevations, the terrain below disintegrates and these landscapes no longer conform to the borders established in the last century. Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and France have rendered boundaries fluid through a series of bilateral agreements. In the coming decades when their geographies re-stabilize, new frontiers will be drawn to honour their various treaties. This willingness to re-imagine conventions of autonomy is one scant silver lining of glacial extinction. These vistas are lovely but far from pristine; they simultaneously contain the aftermath of our Industrial Age and an avant-garde view of statecraft for an era increasingly defined by climate change. “Frontière”, “Frontiera”, and “Grenze” are, respectively, French, Italian and German words for “border”.

Conarroe’s sweeping vistas are imbued with his command of light and colour, and emphasize his fascination with a landscape affected by human existence. His photographs are also evidence of his remarkable stamina for journeying. Previous projects saw him zig-zag across and circumnavigate North America. For this project, he spent several years locating remote vantage points in order to fully capture the scope of this region between countries.

Scott Conarroe (b. Edmonton, 1974) holds a MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Recent exhibitions include a two-person show with the legendary mountaineer and photographer Vittorio Sella at Photographica Fine Art Gallery (Lugano, Switzerland, 2016), and the group show CALAMITA/À at Matèria (Rome, Italy). His work has been collected by many institutions, including the National Gallery of Canada, Stadt Zürich, and the Carnegie Museum of Art. His first monograph, By Rail and By Sea, was published by Black Dog Publishing (London, UK) in 2015. Scott will be an Artist in Residence at Emily Carr University of Art and Design (Vancouver, BC) in the coming spring.
