Sarah Anne Johnson Mid-Career Survey at CAM Raleigh

CAM Raleigh Press Release

The Contemporary Art Museum Raleigh (CAM Raleigh) is pleased to announce WONDERLAND, a mid- career survey of Winnipeg based artist Sarah Anne Johnson, on view at 409 W. Martin Street from February 6 to May 5, 2015. Guest curator Steven Matijcio of Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) and formerly Curator of Contemporary Art at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA), is working closely with the artist on what will be her first mid-career survey. Matijcio first worked with Johnson in her inaugural museum show at Winnipeg’s Plug In ICA in 2006 and sponsored her award-winning 2008 exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario as part of the prestigious Grange Prize. Johnson has continued to work at a prodigious pace since that time, and WONDERLAND will bring together her five major bodies of work to date, as well as a pair of large-scale installations and live performance. In so doing, over a decade of Johnson’s bright, playful and consistently provocative work will be assembled into an exhilarating survey.

The work of Sarah Anne Johnson (b. 1976 Winnipeg, Canada) playfully, but pointedly bridges the real and the imagined; factual and fictive; lived and desired. She works from a bravely personal perspective that reflects her growing concerns for the world, combined with the pursuit of a utopian place that remains tantalizingly out of reach. At every step Johnson attempts to nudge reality closer to her ideals, supplementing quixotic photographs with humble dioramas, Sculpey figurines, painterly interludes, handcrafted doll-houses and a dizzying array of modifications performed upon the photograph itself. As a whole, WONDERLAND presents the first opportunity to trace the continuity and inspiring evolution of this artist’s practice.
