Set in mid-19th century New Zealand this film is about Ada McGrath and her daughter Flora who have moved because Ada’s father sold her into marriage to Alistair Stewart. Ada has not spoken a word since she was 6 years old but she expresses herself through her piano playing and by her daughter interpreting her sign language. When Alistar makes a deal to give the piano away Ada must find away to continue playing her beloved instrument.

This film was nominated for 8 Academy Awards and won 3 for the categories of Best Actress in a Leading Role (Holly Hunter), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Anna Paquin) and Best Original Screenplay (Jane Campion.)
