LUST FOR LIFE

Dir. Vincente Minnelli (USA: 1956), 122 min.
Based on Irving Stone’s 1934 novel, Lust for Life is the biography of the tortured artistic Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh suffered from mental illness which caused him to repeatedly fail at many of his life choices. He fell short as a preacher to coal miners and then as a social activist. As well, he was rejected by a woman he obsessively loved. Theo Van Gogh, Vincent’s brother, played by actor James Donald, provided Van Gogh’s only stabilizing force in his life.
