M. HULOT’S HOLIDAY
Dir. Jacques Tati (France: 1953), 114 min.
Directed and staring Jacques Tati, Mr. Hulot’s Holiday is a comedy film about a man vacationing in an uptight beachside hotel who accidentally, but good-naturedly, causes havoc. Mounsieur Hulot is a pipe-smoking, well-meaning, but clumsy character who disrupts the peace and quiet nature of the resort community while vacationing. This is the first film to introduce this much-loved alter ego who appears in Tati’s subsequent films, including Mon Oncle (1959), Playtime (1967), and Trafic (1971).
