Dir. Gillo Pontecorvo (ITALY: 1966), 121 min. Commissioned by
the Algerian government, The Battle of Algiers is a critically acclaimed
film based on the Algerian War against the French Government in North
Africa. The film is a highly dramatic commentary on urban warfare and
the organization of a guerrilla movement. The Battle of Algiers won the
Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for three
Academy Awards.
