THE AFRICAN QUEEN

Dir. John Huston (UK: 1951), 105 min.

This film is based of the 1935 novel by C. S. Forester. British Methodist missionaries and siblings Samuel Sayer (Robert Morley) and Rose Sayer (Katharine Hepburn,) are living in the village of Kungdu in German East Africa. All of their supplies are delivered by Canadian boat captain Charlie Allnut (Humphrey Bogart,) who drives the African Queen.

After the war breaks out between Germany and Britain the Sayers decide to stay in the village. Soon after they witness the village burned down by the Germans. Samuel dies after the attack leaving Rose alone. She decides to flee with the boat captain Charlie. Rose persuades Charlie to use his boat to attack the German ships, making their mission home more difficult that Charlie could have expected.
