The film was based on a short story of the same name by Chinese author Eileen Chang published in 1979. This film is a set in Hong Kong in 1938 and in Shanghai in 1942, during WWII. A group of Chinese University students are plotting to assassinate Mr. Yee, an important official in the Japanese-ruled Shanghai. The group uses an attractive young woman “Mrs. Mak” to try and seduce Mr. Yee. After “Mrs. Mak” has been accepted into the same social circles as the target, the plan for the assassination begins.
