FESTEN (The Celebration)

Dir. Thomas Vinterberg (Denmark: 1998), 105 min.

Respected, well-known businessman Helge (Henning Moritzen) has gathered his friends and family at the hotel run by his family to celebrate his 60th birthday. Helge is joined by his wife, his two sons and his daughter, along with many other guests. His eldest daughter Linda recently committed suicide and Helge asks his eldest son Christian (Ulrich Thomsen) to say a few words about her for fear he will get too emotional. Christian has already prepared two speeches- a green one and a yellow one. Christian asks his father to choose a speech and Helge picks the green one – The Speech of Truth. As the guests laugh at anticipation of the truth, Helge knows the speech will reveal the family’s dark secret and why Linda killed herself.
