Planet Indigenus, Harbourfront Centre August 14 – 23, 2009

The Harbourfront Centre will be launching a ten day festival this August to showcase the work of Canadian Aboriginal artists. Spanning across all mediums the festival’s guiding themes are Identity, Beyond Contact and Continuity. This festival aims to celebrate and honour the role of art in indigenous life. There will be lots going on from interactive performance pieces to food demonstrations and panel discussions.

One of the artists featured in the festival is Keesic Douglas an Ojibway artist from the Mnjikaning First Nation in central Ontario. The exhibition will feature video and still photography from his series The Vanishing Trace. Keesic Douglas work deals with the romanticisation of the “Indian” and the misrepresentation of aboriginl culture in our society. His video The Vanishing Trace won Best Short Documentary at the 2007 imagineNATIVE Film Festival in Toronto. Keesic Dougla's work will be shown at the York Quay Centre from July 27 - Sept. 13, 2009.
