The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies presents The Robert Giard Memorial Fellowship

The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS) at The Graduate Center, City University of New York is proud to announce the first winner of the $7,500 annual Robert Giard Memorial Fellowship to Sunil Gulati. This award is presented to an emerging, early or mid-career artist from any country working in photography, photo-based media, video, or moving image, including short-form film or video of no more than 30 minutes in length. This award will support a directed project, one that is new or continuing, that addresses issues of sexuality, gender, or LGBTQ identity in honor of Robert Giard, a portrait, landscape, and figure photographer whose work often focused on LGBTQ lives and issues.

The Robert Giard Fellowship was awarded in June 2009 for Sonali Gulati’s documentary film Out & About that focuses on the central question: "What do parents do when they find out that their child is gay?" Sonali Gulati is an Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Photography & Film. She has produced and directed a number of short films that have screened at over two hundred film festivals worldwide. She has won awards, grants, and fellowships from the Third Wave Foundation, World Studio Foundation, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Theresa Pollak Award for Excellence in the Arts, amongst several others.
